Another set of criticisms against the Quran centers around women's rights, with opponents accusing the book of discriminatory treatment and degrading women. The common understanding of these verses among Muslims, along with certain laws and behaviors, has also played a role in confirming and spreading these criticisms.
However, if we base our judgment on a comprehensive and impartial study of the Quran—and, of course, the "context of its revelation in the Pre-Islamic (Jahiliyyah) society"—we reach astonishing conclusions. In a fiercely patriarchal society that granted no rights to women, this book undertook a serious struggle to defend the rights and dignity of women.
In this video, we answer the following questions:
Why does the Quran, in many verses and despite the rules of the Arabic language, mention women separately alongside men?
What is the true meaning of expressions like "men are the protectors/maintainers (Qawwam) of women" or "men have a degree over them"? Do these verses indicate an inherent superiority of men, or do they express an administrative and financial responsibility?
Why can Surah An-Nisa be considered an "unparalleled charter in defense of women's rights"?
Contrary to popular belief, Surah An-Nisa begins by stating that humanity is independent of gender, and the message of many of its verses emphasizes the importance of women's rights and the duties of men toward them.
