Does Morality Take Precedence over Religious Appearances?
7:28 Does Morality Take Precedence over Religious Appearances? | Criteria for Identifying Inherent (Fitrah) Religion
By examining the verses of the Quran, we realize that the ideal religion of this book is the Hanif religion (monotheism). When we asked the Quran what it means by Hanif religion, it presented it as the religion of inherent human nature (Fitrah) and humanity. Now we want to know which religion can be considered inherent and human, because without establishing the criteria for being inherent/innate, all conflicting schools of thought and interpretations could present themselves as an inherent and human religion.
This examination shows that the most important characteristic of an inherent religion is its reliance on reason (intellect) and human perception faculties, and prioritizing morality over the literal/outward appearances of religious texts. However, most custodians of official religions, under the pretext of intellect's limitations and fallibility, introduce their own interpretations and preferences as God's command and prioritize them over shared human values.
In this episode of the series "Islam; Why and How?", we examine one of the key questions regarding the recognition of true religion: How is the religion we have chosen measured against human nature, intellect, and human conscience? Seyyed Hamid Hosseini, citing verses from the Holy Quran (including Surahs Ar-Rum, Ash-Shams, and Al-A'raf), explains why the Quran considers human intellect and perceptual faculties valid, and how a conflict between religious interpretations and human ethics or conscience can be a sign of religious deviation or misunderstanding.
Topics and subjects discussed in this video:
Definition of Fitrah (nature) as the shared structure of human creation
Validity of intellect, conscience, and perception faculties in evaluating religious teachings
Priority and precedence of morality and humanity over religious appearances and interpretations
